Deborah Ann "Debbie" Pople, née Ryan, left this world on May 15, 2026, with her daughters by her side. She was born on April 29, 1954, to Bill and Mae Ryan at the Burderop Park US Air Force Hospital in Wroughton, Wiltshire, England, while Bill was stationed there during his Air Force service. The young family made their way back to the States in 1955, and they settled in the Mount Greenwood neighborhood of Chicago. Debbie shared her childhood with her siblings, Bob, Tim, Judy, and Chris, and an extended family including many cousins, aunts, and uncles. During adolescence, Debbie fell into a lifelong love with the Chicago Cubs. Debbie graduated from Mount Assisi Academy in 1972 and received a nursing diploma from South Chicago Community Hospital School of Nursing in 1975. She began her nursing career at St. Francis Hospital in Blue Island while also taking classes at St. Xavier College, from which she graduated in 1978 with a BA in Social Sciences. She married Jerry Pople, and the couple had their first daughter Alli in 1979. Second daughter Bridget came along in 1980. The family moved to Ellicott City, Maryland, in 1986, where Debbie continued her career at Prince George's General Hospital in Cheverly and Montgomery General Hospital in Olney. She also had the chance to indulge her interests in American and presidential history during the family's time there, taking every opportunity to visit the Smithsonian museums, tour the US Capitol, and participate in public functions like the White House Easter Egg Roll and the Inaugural parade with her daughters. At age 36 she decided to go back to school and pursued her JD at the University of Maryland School of Law, graduating in 1993. She worked at the Baltimore labor and employment law firm Kahn, Smith & Collins before the family moved again to Raleigh, North Carolina, in 1996. Debbie and Jerry split up not long after the move, but she soldiered on, passing the North Carolina bar exam and, combining her interests in medicine and law, transitioned her career to the pharmaceutical industry. She worked at PPD in Morrisville for almost 20 years, retiring as an Associate Director in 2017 after helping to usher new pharmaceuticals through the FDA testing process. The latter years of her life were filled with excitement and happiness. She entered her Grandma era in 2004 when Alli's son Will was born, and Bridget's daughter Cara joined the party in 2011. Debbie vacationed often with her siblings and mother and saw Paris, London, Peru, Korea, Israel, Alaska, Aruba, and Italy, among others. Facebook and fate reconnected her with her old friend Tom Kleppetsch, and the two enjoyed years of companionship. She relocated to Winston-Salem, North Carolina, in 2016 to live with Alli and her family. When the Cubbies won the World Series title later that year, she flew the "W" flag outside of their home with pride. Over time, Alli and her husband Jeff became kind and compassionate caregivers to Debbie. Debbie is survived by her mother, Mary Alice "Mae" Ryan; siblings, Robert "Bob" Ryan (Lauren), Timothy "Tim" Ryan (Ewa), Judith "Judy" Doyle (the late Mark), and Christine "Chris" Arvens (John); daughters, Allison "Alli" George (Jeff) and Bridget Pople (Josh Therrien); grandchildren, William "Will" George and Cara Yang; and many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her father, William "Bill" Ryan. The family thanks the staff at Lexington Medical Center, Davidson Health and Rehab Center, and Hinkle Hospice House for the excellent care they provided to Debbie in her final weeks.
