Richard A. Olund, age 100, US Army WWII Veteran. Beloved husband for 63 years of the late Dorothy A.; devoted father of the late Claudia (late Jack) Powers, and Victoria Ornoff; loving grandfather of Christina (Todd) Powers-Agnew, and Rachel Ornoff; proud great-grandfather of Bridget Wizorek, Jasmine Masoud, and Zachary Masoud; kind uncle of Alec Olund.
Born in 1924 to Swedish immigrant parents, Alex and Elenore, he grew up on Chicago's South Side in the West Lawn neighborhood near 62nd and Tripp. In 1943, he was drafted into military service and joined the Army.
Olund, was just 19 when he landed on Omaha Beach behind General George S. Patton in German-occupied France in July 1944 a month after D-Day with the Third Army. Olund served as a surgical technician in Gen. George S. Patton's Third Army, providing medical and dental care to soldiers on the front lines across France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany.
Richard was a retired serviceman from GE with over 40 years of dedicated service. He was a member of American Legion Post 111 and VFW 2791 Bremen Post. Rich had a passion for gardening, woodworking, and photography.
There will be a Graveside Committal Service on June 23, at 1:00 PM, directly at St. Mary Cemetery in Evergreen Park.
